You Can't Read Your Way Across Water

woman swimming in ocean

I want to ask you something, and I'd like you to answer honestly, just to yourself.

How much do you already know about how to live well?

If you're like most of the thoughtful people I work with, the answer is: a great deal.

You've read the books. You understand your patterns. You could probably teach a workshop on boundaries, or nervous-system regulation, or the importance of rest. You know what you're supposed to do.

And yet.

There's often a quiet but important gap between everything we know and how we actually live.

We understand the insight completely and still find ourselves on the far side of it, doing the old thing, feeling the old way. If knowledge alone were enough, that gap would have closed years ago. For many, it hasn't.

I want to offer you a distinction today that reorganized how I understand my own process of growth so that you have the opportunity to experience the same success.

Ultimately, the quantum leaps I have achieved in my own wellbeing are a result of the inner Alchemical process that the ancients understood, taught and lived.

But today I want to make this simple.

It's the difference between information and transformation. They' are two very different things that bring very different results. And the world we live in is constantly directing us to information. Telling us we don't know enough. That we need more information..more information…more information.

Until we go on overload. And never actually reach the transformation we are seeking. So we keep consuming more and more information while we remain in the same inner cycle.

Let me explain.

Information is what you acquire. It lives in the mind. You can gather it, store it, recall it, and pass it along, and none of that requires you to change at all. You can know everything about compassion and still be short with the person in front of you.

Transformation is what you undergo through lived experience. It doesn't get added to you — it changes the YOU that everything else is happening to. Afterward, you don't have more facts about compassion. You're simply more compassionate, without thinking about it, the way you're right-handed. Something at the root moved, and now the behavior follows on its own instead of being managed by the mind.

Here's the clearest way I know to feel the difference.

You could read every book ever written about swimming. The physiology, the stroke mechanics, the history of the sport, the physics of buoyancy. You could become the single most knowledgeable person on Earth about swimming — and still sink the moment you entered deep water.

Because swimming was never about information. It's a transformation the body undergoes in the water, when you are DOING…practicing….LIVING IT….usually in the presence of someone who already knows how. That is how it becomes embodied. And there is something different that happens with the guidance of a coach. A transmission. No amount of reading substitutes for it. And once it is embodied through consistency and repetition, it's permanent — you never have to relearn it, and you couldn't forget it if you tried.

Almost everything that matters most in a human life works this way.

You cannot read your way into peace. You cannot study your way into presence. You cannot think your way into the felt knowledge that you are enough. These aren't more information waiting to be found. They're transformations waiting to be undergone.

This is why so many bright, committed people eventually plateau — not from any failure, but because they've been reaching for information when what their life is actually asking for is transformation. More books won't close that gap, for the same reason more books won't teach a body to float. It's simply the wrong kind of tool for the task.

It's why the ancient traditions were built the way they were.

They were containers for transformation — designed around lineage, initiation, and the direct transmission of something that has never once traveled through the page, because it can't. It moves the way learning to swim moves: in the water, in presence, person to person.

If you've been quietly wondering - maybe even frustrated by - why more learning hasn't produced more change, I'd offer you this: There may be nothing wrong with your effort at all.

You may simply have reached the edge of what information can do — and arrived at the threshold of what only transformation can.

If you have already taken classes with me or received Adept Initiation, the transformation begins to take root when you use what you have been taught every day. When you jump in the water and actually start swimming.

Keep going!

With Love, Erin

This is the exact work I created the Beyond Ordinary 5-day intensive to do.

It isn't a course, and it isn't just another weekend of inspiring information you'll take notes on and slowly forget. It's a small, in-person initiation retreat — an entry point into a lineage of teaching carried for thousands of years, offered the only way this work has ever been able to move: in presence, person to person.

Beyond Ordinary

A 5-Day Spiritual Training & Initiation Retreat

Rochester, Michigan Limited to 10–12 participants

You can learn everything about it here: DrErinBannink.com/retreat

If something in this letter resonated — if you've done the reading and the learning and still feel that pull toward something deeper — I would be honored to have you in the room.
